Jed Kurzban is a nationally recognized, award-winning trial attorney and one of the country’s leading voices in kidney disease litigation. As managing partner of Kurzban Kurzban Tetzeli & Pratt, P.A., a firm with more than 40 years of history, he represents seriously injured people and families against hospitals, physicians, and corporations. His cases have taken him across Florida and throughout the United States. A National Authority on Kidney Disease Litigation
Families come to Jed from across the country when kidney disease has been missed, misdiagnosed, or mistreated. Most advanced kidney failure can be prevented or delayed when it is caught and treated early. When providers miss the signs, patients face dialysis, transplants, and often premature death. Jed has taken these cases to verdict and to the Florida Supreme Court. The firm’s kidney disease results include:
- $6.1 million jury verdict awarded by a Hawaiian jury in Honolulu for a medical malpractice claim against a Wahiawa general practitioner physician. When the doctor finally referred the plaintiff to a specialist, it was discovered that he was suffering from end-stage kidney failure and, as a result, suffered catastrophic injury to his health and his business.
- $5.7 million Miami jury verdict for doctors who missed open and obvious kidney disease and failed to refer the patient for treatment.
- $4.1 million Florida Supreme Court decision in a case where a pediatrician failed to timely diagnose and treat a child’s kidney failure. The child underwent a kidney transplant at age six. The case helped define what qualifies as an expert witness in Florida.
- $1.825 Million Jury Verdict in North Dakota for failure to diagnose and treat kidney disease by Defendant Mercy Medical Center who failed to properly diagnosis and treat plaintiff’s kidney disease. After Defendants appealed the jury award, the North Dakota Supreme Court affirmed the jury’s award and awarded costs. The parties agreed to $1.825 million.
Jed’s authority also shows in his writing and teaching. He co-authored “An Overview of Kidney Disease Medical Malpractice Litigation” for the American Association for Justice’s Trial magazine. He regularly teaches attorneys across the country on medical malpractice case selection, expert testimony, and trial strategy.

Trial Experience and Results
Jed joined the firm in 1995 and became an equity partner in 2013. He has served as lead trial counsel in every area of tort law, with a practice focused on medical malpractice, product liability, and personal injury on behalf of plaintiffs. The firm’s published results in these areas include:
- $3.6 million verdict against the Department of Transportation for the death of a single parent, plus a $2 million special bill from the Florida Legislature.
- $3.5 million medical malpractice settlement for delayed treatment of a post-surgical infection.
- $2.8 million verdict against an insurer in an uninsured-motorist case, the largest known verdict for a single-car accident. The case helped create Florida’s “no-impact” law.
- $2.3 million wrongful death settlement against two construction companies.
Jed’s work has also changed Florida law. He won one of the first trial orders giving patients access to hospital adverse-incident records under Amendment 7. He helped a man wrongfully imprisoned for 25 years recover more than $1 million from the State of Florida, which led to a new statute for others in his position. He also secured a wrongful death recovery from the Department of Transportation that exceeded the sovereign immunity cap.

Author, Educator, and Advocate
Jed wrote How Justice Is Served (Expert Press, 2021), a book on trial law that draws on his courtroom experience. He hosts the podcasts Serving Justice with Jed Kurzban and How Justice is Served. He has taught pre-trial civil litigation at the University of Miami School of Law and served on the Board of Directors of the Academy of Florida Trial Lawyers. He has lobbied in Tallahassee on behalf of injured consumers since 2003.
