Kidney Pathology: An Overview
If you suspect you have kidney disease or have been advised by your physician to seek a nephrologist, the next step will likely be a more conclusive test. While a urine and blood analysis can show proteinuria (protein in the urine) or abnormal creatinine levels (kidney function indicator), the only way to definitively diagnose kidney disease and the specific type of kidney disease is through a kidney biopsy.
Kidney Biopsy
A kidney biopsy is not a difficult procedure, but it is the most effective way to conclusively diagnose kidney failure and other renal issues. Most are familiar with biopsies in the context of cancer and tumors, but biopsies are also performed on organs and other tissues.
A biopsy is simply an analysis used to determine the composition and nature of cells and tissues. While the patient is under local anesthesia, a long needle is used to remove a tiny sample from each kidney; the samples may also be obtained, alternatively, through conventional invasive surgery. Both kidneys must be biopsied. A biopsy gives your nephrologist the information he or she needs to prescribe your best course of treatment.
Testing The Biopsy Sample
Once the kidney biopsy is complete, the pathologist will run three tests. All three must be completed to fully diagnose kidney disease. Not all pathology labs run all three tests, and your kidney samples may have to go to more than one lab. These tests are conducted under an electron microscope and will reveal how much damage has been done to your kidneys.
The three tests are:
- Immunofluorescence
- Light microscopy
- Original magnification
Based on the biopsy results, your renal specialist can determine how to best treat your condition. You may be a candidate for dialysis, prescription medications or even a kidney transplant. Kidney disease can be chronic or acute, and if your physician does not treat you properly, the condition may result in death.
