Asylum denials have greatly increased

On Behalf of | Dec 13, 2018 | US Immigration Law |

As Americans have been hearing for months, many immigrants to the United States have applied for asylum so that they can stay in this country. These immigrants have come to the United States because they are no longer safe in their home country. A recent report has indicated that many asylum seekers in the U.S. are being denied.

The Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) has released a report saying that 86 percent of asylum applications were denied during the 2018 fiscal year, which ended in September. This is the highest denial rate in the Miami area since at least 2001. Miami courts heard the second largest number of asylum cases, behind New York.

Besides seeking asylum, immigrants in Florida are having other problems. The largest jump in Immigration and Customs Enforcement occurred in here in 2017, and immigrants’ rights groups have issued a travel warning to new immigrants to avoid our state because of the hostility they may face.

Immigrants to the U.S. come here for a reason. Whether it is to escape persecution in their home country, follow a new job opportunity, reunite with family members, attend school or a myriad of other reasons, immigrants should always be welcome. Unfortunately, the current political climate is making it tough for those who are seeking asylum in the United States.

Many people come to the United States to seek asylum. Unfortunately, many are denied this right. An immigration attorney can help their client with their immigration needs and secure their future.
