Pew Research says number of new immigrants from Asia exceeds Hispanic immigration

A report released Tuesday says that new immigration from Asian countries now outnumber the immigration of Hispanics. The Pew Research Center also says that recent Asian immigrants are three times more likely than any other foreign nationals to get permanent resident status through employment based visa processes rather than family sponsorship in immigration law.

More federal inquiry for Chipotle in wake of I-9 raid

More than a year ago this blog reported a story of the immigration I-9 audit directed toward the Chipotle restaurant chain. At the time, Chipotle was one of the largest companies to fall under the scrutiny of Immigrations and Customs Enforcement under an I-9 compliance audit. The company eventually let go hundreds of workers after the ICE I-9 raid.

Economics professor devises market based immigration reform

A West Coast professor of economics is arguing that U.S. immigration laws should be reformed through a market-based system of auctions. The economist is unleashing his idea this week, and sources indicate that his idea of reforming immigration laws has attracted some attention on Capitol Hill.

ICE continues conducting I-9 compliance raids in 2012

Immigration and Customs Enforcement has not said much recently regarding audits of companies in relation to I-9 compliance issues. However, the Wall Street Journal reports that the Department of Homeland Security is continuing to use the so-called "silent raids" to enforcement immigration employment laws.

Will EB-5 visas help finance new home for Tampa Bay Rays?

Financing for professional sports facilities can involve complicated issues. Tampa-St. Petersburg leaders are reportedly looking at U.S. immigration law as a potential source of revenues for a new stadium for the Tampa Bay Rays. The actual source of revenues would be foreign investors, but the investments would flow through the EB-5 investor's visa program authorized under immigration law under an idea that chamber of commerce leaders have been studying.

Ground breaking at Miramar EB-5 visa fueled project

Developers reportedly broke ground on the first new office complex in three years in the Miramar market. The project is also believed to be the first in Broward County to break ground under the Immigrant Investor Visa Program, according to a report in the Sun Sentinel. The investor visa program is an employment-based visa program, often referred to under its classification under U.S. immigration law as the EB-5 visa program.

Miami Marlin relief pitcher struggling with work visa issue

Pitchers and catchers are reporting to Florida for spring training. Absent from the Miami Marlins' training camp this year is Juan Carlos Ovieda, due to a snag in immigration. Many Florida marlins fans know the relief pitcher by the name Leo Nunez, who allegedly used a fake name to play pro ball. Now the Major League ball player is caught up in an immigration issue. He is working on obtaining a work visa to allow him to re-enter the country to rejoin his teammates at spring training.

Hospital denies life saving surgery to immigrant

The story of one undocumented immigrant from Mexico reads like some kind of odd application of the Perfect Storm. Multiple forces have stacked up against the man's very survival. The story does not come from here in Florida, but from the West Coast. An immigration I-9 audit of the company where the man worked resulted in the immigrant finding himself without a job. The man has been undergoing dialysis for roughly eight years due to kidney failure. Doctors say that the life-expectancy of someone in his condition is about six years.
