Supreme Court says illegal to require voters to prove citizenship

Some residents here in Florida may be familiar with the National Voter Registration Act of 1993.  For those who may not be familiar with this act, it was established to make registration and voting easier for all Americans.  But several states have challenged this federal law, including Alabama, Arizona, Georgia, Kansas and Tennessee, with another 12 other states contemplating similar actions.  These states are challenging the law by requiring voters to prove U.S. citizenship prior to voting--something the U.S. Supreme Court ruled to be unlawful this month.

Could Americans see immigration reform in the up-coming weeks?

The end of March was supposed to be the self-imposed deadline the "Gang of Eight" gave for having a completed immigration reform bill. But with the nation fast moving into the third week in April, it's clear that this deadline has been pushed back. But as Sen. John McCain explained to reporters recently, he believes that he and the remaining legislators may have finally ironed out all of the kinks and are almost ready to present the proposed bill to Congress.

Immigration reform group honored by AIJ

The Americans for Immigrant Justice, a Miami-based group, chose to honor bipartisan efforts at immigration reform at its 17th annual celebration. The event, to be held at the Hotel Intercontinental, will focus this year on members of Congress who have aided immigration reform by sponsoring legislation to legalize undocumented aliens, whose numbers are said to exceed 11.5 million in the United States.Current legislation being proposed and supported by the White House would grant undocumented immigrants temporary legal status as long as they have no criminal convictions. In eight years, these immigrants would be eligible for a green card after paying taxes and fees. Other proposed legislation would grant temporary status to the undocumented but would allow them to receive their green cards only when they show proficiency in English. Senators working on the legislation have urged the White House to suspend its own activities and allow Congress a chance to work.

Bipartisan effort to debate Startup Visa Act in Senate revived

A bill to provide a new pathway to citizenship for foreign nations was introduced in the U.S. Senate in late January. The measure, known as the Startup Visa Act, has previously been introduced-but like many immigration reform measures, the Startup Visa Act did not fare well on a couple of prior trips in the Senate in Washington. D.C. However, with new interest in the issue of comprehensive immigration reform, ideas are making their way back into the public debate on Capitol Hill.

Naturalization ceremony held at US Marine boot camp

Ten men stood at attention January 31 during a Family Day ceremony at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island. The ceremony was the fourth such program at the boot camp this year. Military families are often proud to attend graduation ceremonies after a recruit makes it through basic training and officially becomes a member of the U.S. armed forces. But, the January 31, 2013 Family Day ceremony for the ten new Marines was not a graduation ceremony, but a naturalization ceremony.

Officials say that immigration reform may be possible

Immigration reform has been bandied around for some time. Last year saw various battles in the courts over state laws on immigration. The Obama administration has made policy changes in immigration enforcement, as this blog has discussed.

Could true immigration reform be on the horizon? P.2

In the last entry, this blog began discussing the issue of immigration reform, and recent comments and commentary suggesting that Congress may be able to break the gridlock on true reform. The discussion left off that recent public dialog has included the concept of comprehensive immigration reform, although what that may mean seems a bit elusive.

Florida students need not prove parent's legal status for in-state tuition

U.S. citizen students who are the children of undocumented immigrants living in Florida are denied equal protection of the law if they are forced to pay the higher out-of-state tuition rates, according to a recent ruling in federal court.

Visa is option for some undocumented immigrants in foster care

Earlier this month, we discussed President Barack Obama exercising his executive authority by ordering the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. The DACA program will allow young immigrants who were brought into the country illegally by their parents to apply for a temporary deportation reprieve.
